Just Read: Aiming for Love by Mary Connealy

Note: I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Mary Connealy’s Aiming for Love kicks off her newest series with her usual style: plenty of action, plenty of lovable characters, and enough mystery to make you keep reading.

The action starts off pretty quickly in the story when Jo Nordegren meets Dave Warden. Dave’s ideas about Jo’s safety create some pretty humorous interactions. And Jo has some pretty strange ideas about the Bible. Her and her sisters grew up believing there are two Good Books, one of which is actually a book of fables. Of course this is a foreign notion to Dave. This disparity lends itself to a bit of comedy when both feel sorry for the misguided views of the other.

There’s a great thread throughout the book about fear and allowing it to keep us from living. The characters discuss this a great deal, especially the fact that danger is everywhere and we have no guarantees in this life. This provided a great arc for Jo with realistic setbacks and tests to her newfound conviction.

I felt the romance was a bit rushed, but considering all the characters had been through –gunshot wounds, disease, a runaway sister– I could understand a bond growing between Jo and Dave rather quickly. So that was something I was able to set aside. I do wish Jo’s views on the book of fables were rectified before the end, though. I can only assume Connealy plans on addressing that later in the series. But I felt like that was an important issue to address before any thoughts of a wedding.

Overall, Mary Connealy has crafted an entertaining, fast-paced read that will definitely keep you enthralled. I’m excited to see what becomes of Jo’s two sisters in the rest of the series.
