A Man With a Past continues a series with an interesting premise. But this installment didn’t catch my attention as quickly as the last one.

Falcon Hunt awakens without a past, or at least not one he can recall. He’s got brothers he can’t remember, and he’s interested in the prettiest woman in the area, Cheyenne. Only trouble is, a few flashes of memory make Falcon wonder if he’s already married. He can’t imagine abandoning a wife. But his pa did just that–twice. Soon it’s clear someone is gunning for the Hunt brothers. When one of his brothers is shot, Falcon and Cheyenne set out to find who attacked him. They encounter rustled cattle, traitorous cowhands, a missing woman, and outlaws that take all their savvy to overcome. As love grows between these two independent people, Falcon must piece together his past if they’re to have any chance at a future.
My Thoughts
I have been a fan of Mary Connealy for several years, but I found A Man With a Past hard to get into. I think this is largely to do with the beginning mostly being a recap of Braced for Love. I can appreciate wanting to tell the events from Cheyenne and Falcon’s point-of-view, and I did gain a few new insights, but most of it just felt like a lengthy synopsis instead of fresh material. Once the novel caught up to the events of Braced for Love, though, I found myself intrigued.
The romance was a bit rushed to me, but I did like Falcon and Cheyenne as a couple. They’re both tough and suit each other well. I had a hard time connecting with them, though. I never felt like I really got to know Falcon. And though I understood Cheyenne’s frustration, to me she came off as a brat for a large part of the novel. She seemed better by the end, though.
Overall, while I don’t think this is Connealy’s best, I did enjoy the continuation of the series, and I think any fan of western romance will enjoy it.
