Gratitude Is Not Just for Thanksgiving

Gratitude Isn't Just for Thanksgiving

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. – Psalm 100:4

This year’s Thanksgiving holiday has come and gone, and for must of us, so has our gratitude. 2020 has been a rough year. Add that to the fact that this year’s Thanksgiving gatherings have been smaller than usual, and it can be hard to find something to be thankful for.

Then again, most of the time we don’t even consider gratitude until Thanksgiving comes around. But it should be a daily attitude, not a once-a-year event. We all have something to be thankful for, whether it’s a good year or not. Sometimes, though, we miss it.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately because with everything that’s changed this year, I’ve noticed some of the things I’ve taken for granted. And I’ve also noticed some things that haven’t changed.

God’s still God.

My family’s still close.

And there are still a lot of great books I haven’t read yet.

You know something I noticed about that list of examples? Some are big blessings, like our Heavenly Father. Some are small blessings, like getting to read a good book. But that’s the kicker, isn’t it? Sometimes we forget to include the small blessings. And what we consider small blessings may be big to others.

For example, there’s food in my belly. That’s a small blessing to me, but there are hungry souls out there who don’t know when they’ll get to eat next.

I have a warm blanket on my bed. That’s a small blessing, but someone out there is cold tonight.

When we begin to list those seemingly small blessings, we realize just how much God has done for us. And this should be a daily practice, not just something we do in November.

Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. – 1 Chronicles 16:8

What about you, do you have a daily habit of listing your blessings? Let me know in the comments!
