Still Waters is poignant, gripping, and full of the Southern dynamics I grew up with. I loved all the characters, even the ones who got on my nerves a time or two. But hey, what’s family without a few annoying members?
This novel seemed to tap into everything I love. A loving family that isn’t without its flaws. A romantic storyline that isn’t the whole point of the novel. A faith journey that drags you into the story because you need those answers, too. It isn’t some light-hearted little romance that leaves you sighing with contentment when you set it down. No, this is a thoughtful novel that leaves you staring out the window as all the little lessons Brackett drops throughout the story converge in your mind like a philosophical whirlwind and you just need a moment.
I can’t guarantee, though, that everyone else will cooperate.
If you pick up this book looking for escape, Brackett’s descriptions of the sands of Edisto, the sounds of the ocean, and the scenery will definitely make you feel like you’re at the beach. But if you’re looking for an escape from all of life’s problems, you won’t find it here. The book itself is about a young woman trying to get away from life’s problems and learning she can’t. And that’s a lesson we can all benefit from at some point.
At times, Cora Anne could get on my nerves with her attitude. But seeing her from Annie’s and Tennessee’s perspectives helped me to appreciate her more for what she is: a broken woman who can’t move past the trap of guilt. Brackett also shows Cora Anne’s growth slowly over the course of the novel. Because, let’s face it, a miraculous 180 wouldn’t have been realistic, especially for Cora Anne. She needs some moments of angst and hunting for crabs and renovating a beach house to grow into the woman she needs to be.
Where can I buy a copy?
I’m so glad you asked. You can click the book cover image to buy Still Waters from Amazon. (It’s also available on Kindle Unlimited.) And of course, you can check out your local bookstore.
Also, if you go to Lindsey’s website, you can sign up for her newsletter and get a free novella that features two secondary characters you meet in Still Waters, Hannah and Ben. And it’s a Christmas story. What’s better than that? She also has a pretty cool inspiration board on Pinterest. Just sayin’.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to try to find a way to get my hands on her sequel, The Bridge Between.
