Knox is my first Susan May Warren novel. I’ve heard a lot of good things about her books, and her series The Montana Marshalls kept showing up on Instagram. I have to admit, the covers caught my attention. But it was the writing that kept it.
Knox is the first book in the series, and from the first line, I was hooked. Warren definitely knows how to grab your attention and keep it. And Knox Marshall is such a relatable character with insecurities, obligations, and occasional what if? moments. I think his strength really came out when he first met Kelsey. I’m a sucker for a good knight in shining armor, but Knox is so humble about it. Kelsey herself was an interesting character because she has this different side of her on stage that she tends to hide behind.
Warren was able to take these two characters, throw them in a backstage dressing room with a little girl and reveal so much about their strengths and weaknesses in a matter of pages. It’s incredible really.
Knox is full of lessons of faith, fear, and family bonds as Kelsey struggles with the demons from her past and Knox struggles with guilt. Warren contrasts the traditional family with the family you select yourself by showing Knox’s relationship with the Marshall clan and Kelsey’s relationship with her fellow Yankee Belles and their manager. Both families are strong and loving, and both are a gift from God.
I wish there had been more scenes between Knox and Kelsey. I know that Warren was setting up Tate and Glo’s relationship for the next book. But I didn’t want to see as much of them as I did Knox and Kelsey. Especially at the end. But her ending did make me want to read Tate as soon as possible.
I think I may officially be a Susan May Warren fan now.
