I had a hard time putting So Bright a Hope down. It took so much willpower to turn off my Kindle and go to sleep. I loved Captain James Higley from the moment he was introduced in So True a Love, even though he was a dreaded Redcoat. And then in So Pure a Heart, I got the distinct impression there was something mysterious about him.
And boy, was I right!
James is actually a Patriot spy!
This book begins right where So Pure a Heart ends. I’ll try to avoid spoilers, but Caroline Whitney has no idea what has happened to her cousin Hannah Young. She doesn’t realize she can trust James, but she’s drawn to him nonetheless. For her own protection, he takes her prisoner and heads toward Boston. And thus begins an adventure fraught with danger, filled with intrigue, and fueled by patriotism.
Amber Lynn Perry doesn’t skimp on detail, and at times, she had me sitting on the edge of my seat. Okay, so I was actually sprawled across my bed, but I was still anxiously awaiting how the hero and heroine would escape from the latest scrape. I loved watching Caroline slowly grow to trust James and James working to maintain his cover among the British.
I’m a bit disappointed that the series has come to an end. But she mentioned in a note at the back of the book that she’s writing a spin-off series! Meanwhile, I think I’ll bide my time by reading her other books again, including her novella, If Not For Thee.
