Jody Hedlund’s Rebellious Heart made me thankful for education. Susanna Smith wants to receive the education that’s offered to her brother, but she is denied that because she’s a woman. Sometimes I forget that women didn’t always have the access to education that’s granted today. I’m very blessed to live in a time when I have several educational opportunities available to me.
Second, it’s incredibly humbling to be reminded of what our forefathers sacrificed for the liberty we enjoy today. Benjamin Ross believed in freedom for everyone, not just who the king deemed worthy. This was a wonderful reminder that God created us all equal and everyone deserves respect no matter their social class.
Third, this book got me to thinking about conscientious objectors. Sometimes we have a blind obedience to our laws, and we forget that God’s law trumps the laws of men. A lot of people have just accepted things as they are when God explicitly says it’s wrong. I appreciated the ongoing discussion between Susanna and Ben. Their arguments could get a bit heated, but it was nice seeing both sides of the argument. It really got me to thinking about my own life and areas where I could be more obedient to God.
Overall, this book is SO good! It has intrigue, danger, and a healthy dose of romance that wouldn’t let me put it down. Jody Hedlund has yet to disappoint me.
